Growing Non-GMO Lettuce Leaf Basil Herb Seeds

Begin basil indoors 6-8 weeks prior to transplanting or direct sow after frost has passed. If beginning indoors, thin out sprouts to 2” apart, and harden them off. Transplant or direct sow once daytime temperatures are at least 70°F and nighttime temps are above 50°F. Direct sow or transplant according to the spacing indicated above.

Basil thrives in wet soil. Water regularly but not to the point of sogginess. Once the plants have established, occasionally allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings; this prevents root rot. To extend the harvesting season, pinch off blossoms as they begin to grow; this will also encourage more leaf production. Keep the area around the base of the plant well-weeded to prevent crowding out. Mulch can also improve soil moisture retention.

Lettuce Leaf Basil in the Herb Garden

Lettuce Leaf Basil is a superb addition to any herb garden because of its large and aromatic leaf. It grows abundantly and can even repel insects such as mosquitos and flies in the summertime. Lettuce Leaf Basil is also grown to protect other plants and is known to bolt less readily than other herbs in the heat of the summer.

Harvesting Lettuce Leaf Basil

Harvest the leaves before the blooming takes place in the fall; this will ensure the best texture and flavor of the leaves. Pinch or cut off individual leaves. To prolong the life of the plant, never remove more than one-third of the plant at once. Allow a recovery time of at least a week between harvests. Harvest as early as five weeks after planting or even earlier for microgreens. The leaves should be 4-5 inches at the time of harvest and produce a sweet scent.

About Lettuce Leaf Basil Garden Seeds

It is said that chewing on and swallowing the fresh leaves of this herb can aid in digestion. Some also recommend brewing tea out of it for the same benefits.

Originally from Japan, it pairs well with many savory Asian dishes. When cooked, it behaves similarly to Italian or Genovese basil. Add it to salads, wraps, or sandwiches in place of lettuce to get that crunch but with a boost of flavor!

Although it can withstand a larger range of temperatures than traditional basil, it thrives the most in warmer temperatures above 70°F.

This variety is also very popular as a microgreen. It is crisp and has a sweeter yet milder flavor than traditional basil varieties.

Lettuce Leaf Basil is often described as sweet in aroma and flavor but it pairs very well with savory flavors. It performs in the kitchen when fresh or cooked.

It is a great choice for container gardens as well. The large leaves look striking and can be planted with other herbs in the same pot. We recommend at least a 6” pot for optimum production.

Tips From Our Gardeners

"This variety of basil is perfect for Vietnamese Spring Rolls also known as salad rolls. They are large, crunchy, and have that distinct basil flavor which is exactly what you want for this dish!"
