Growing Parsley Pea Microgreen Seeds
Rinse the seeds you plan to use. Presoak the pea seeds for 8-12 hours in cool water. Prepare a tray with drainage holes and a level growing surface of coco coir or fertilizer-free potting soil by lightly patting it down and misting it with water until wet. Place another tray underneath that does not have drainage holes. This will allow you to water the microgreens from underneath without wetting the leaves. Sprinkle the Parsley Pea seeds densely across the surface. Use a seed shaker or clean, re-used spice jar with holes to spread them out. Water them in with a mister or spray bottle. Place a second black tray on top of the seeds to begin a blackout period.
Put the tray in a dark location for 2-3 days. Then, place a 5 lb weight on the top tray for 1-2 days. After they have all germinated and look plump, lightly spritz them with water. Water from underneath every day. Move your seedlings to the sun or under a grow light after they have developed a set of true leaves or have grown to be about 2 inches tall. Water the tray regularly but avoid sogginess. The amount of time between waterings will be different for everyone based on the room temperature and your watering habits. Generally, if growing your seedlings in the sun with a shallow tray, you will have to water them much more frequently than growing them under a grow light in a deep tray. Check the bottom tray daily and refill it with 1-2 cups of water when dry. Keep a keen eye out for mold and treat it quickly with your preferred method.
The most success has been achieved with a heat mat set to maintain the soil temperature at around 65-70 degrees Fahrenheit during the germination phase. Peas like to be kept moister than other microgreens; however, do not allow water to pool for long periods of time. Allow them to grow to the microgreen stage or the pea tendril stage, depending on your preference. Stop watering 8-12 hours before harvest but keep tending to them after harvest! They will re-grow.
Benefits of Parsley Pea Microgreens
Parsley Pea is rich in numerous vitamins and minerals such as Vitamins A, C, E, and folic acid. Pea tendrils are also a great source of high-quality protein and healthy carbohydrates.
Pisum sativum, also known as pea tendrils, is not toxic to dogs, cats, or horses, according to the ASPCA.
Culinary Tips
Around 12 days after planting, the seedlings will be a few inches tall and ready for consumption! Depending on how mature you want your seedlings, you may want to harvest them before or after that time. Slice the greens off the soil and root mass with a sharp knife about a .5 inch up. Cutting up above the soil can limit the need for washing your greens, which reduces their shelf life.
Add these delicious greens to salads, sushi, sandwiches, soups, and smoothies! Eat them fresh as a snack or garnish a dish with them. They pair well with a variety of sweet and savory dishes. They are the perfect microgreen to get beginners hooked!
