Sowing & Growing:
Begin by sowing Yellow Baby Doll Hybrid Watermelon seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before your region’s final frost and once the soil is consistently warm to at least 70℉. Plant watermelons ½-1” deep in seed trays or pots in a rich, well-draining compost or seed starting potting mix. Sow 2-3 seeds in each cell and use a water-mister to keep moisture. Germination will take 1-2 weeks, depending on the warm conditions. Transplant the Yellow Baby Doll Hybrid seedlings once the threat of frost has passed, these melons thrive in 80-90℉ weather. Place young plants in raised hills 1” deep with 2 watermelons per hill, 4-5’ apart and with 6’ in between hills. As long as the soil is fertile with added compost, loamy and well-draining, watermelon seeds of most varieties will grow successfully in any summer garden. In general, watermelons can be susceptible to disease if their leaves remain too wet. To avoid the issue of ground rot, plant in raised hills, use drip irrigation to ensure water drainage or place a wooden board underneath the ripening fruit as they mature. It’s also advised to use row covers and adequate fertilizer that’s nitrogen-based to help your melon crop grow well. These non-GMO Yellow Baby Doll Hybrid Watermelon seeds require full sun, regular watering and soil with a pH of 6.0-7.0.
Harvest Yellow Baby Doll Watermelon as early as 40 days from the sowing date, but be sure to look for the classic signs of ripeness first. Check for the yellow color underneath the watermelons, which is also referred to as the “belly” or base of the fruit. Also, the main vine that curls and meets with the stem will be completely dry with no green color left. Harvest your hybrid plants by cutting near the stem with gardening shears. You can store unrefrigerated ripe watermelon in a cool location for up to 3 weeks. The thin rind of this bright-yellow melon can be pickled or you can freeze the bright-yellow fruit and make watermelon ice pops!
It’s fairly common to know that watermelons are made up of 92% water, but did you know that more people are making and selling watermelon water? Due to its abundance in electrolytes, as a cold-pressed drink, watermelon is becoming a fresh and beneficial alternative to consuming Powerade or even coconut water.
