How To Grow Microgreens
Complete Microgreens Growing Instructions
Microgreen seeds are a faster and healthier alternative to growing mature fruiting crops while just doing so in only 7-10 days. Most microgreen seeds and sunflower sprouts are ready to harvest at about 3-4" tall after the shoots have developed true leaves and plenty of falvorful green chlorophyll.
If you've never had any experience sprouting microgreen seeds, perhaps try a smaller microgreens batch such as a 3x5 or 5x5 insert until more comfortable to fill out an entire 10x10 or 20x10 microgreens tray.
Regardless of size, fill the tray half full with a soil-based or hydroponic medium of your choosing.
It's recommended to seed about 9 oz of presoaked Black Oil sunflower seeds over an entire 20x10 sprouting tray prepared with your growing medium.
While this is only a recommended seeding rate, simply add one even layer of presoaked seeds to the top of your soil before covering with no more than an inch of soil.

Benefits of Sunflower Oil
Although similar in name, Black Seed Oil derived from the Ranunculus family comes from the Nigella sativa plant and is very different from the oils found in Black Oil sunflower seeds.
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant found in some of the most naturally oily garden crops such as avocado, grape, palm, and nuts. However, because sunflower grows so effortlessly, there is no ethical dilemma to its production and harvest as there is with palm and avocado production.
The naturally occurring oil found in Black Oil sunflower seeds from Helianthus annuus is pleasant, mild, and nearly tasteless for fine cooking whereas true Black Seed Oil from Nigella sativa is bitter, pungent, and rarely consumed raw.
Sunflower Microgreens Vs Sunflower Sprouts
Whether it be the use of raw soil, coco coir, or a hydoponic pad such as jute or bamboo, but the growing of microgreen seeds strictly requires the use of some type of medium.
The reason for the medium is to help incubate the microgreen seeds towards better germination. For some tougher seeds such as Black Oil sunflower, the warmth and microbes help to break down the exterior shell, no different than if growing in the garden.
Seed sprouting, as opposed to soil-based microgreen seeds, is 100% hydroponic and does not require any soils or pads to make contact with the seeds. Sprouting seeds germinate simply with a few daily rinses.
Before deciding whether to try microgreen seeds or sprouting seeds, understand your seed first to know whether it prefers soil-based growing like sunflower or cilantro, or if it is truly a hydroponic sprouting seed like clover or alfalfa.
Next time you're going to the Ball Park, try conventional Black Oil sunflower sprouting and microgreen seeds as a healthy alternative to overly salted sunflower snacks.

Sunflower Seeds Nutrition
The miracle of microgreens allows us to consume some the healthiest fruits and vegetables in the world in only a matter of days from seeding. As consumers, we are able to take advantage of the essential vitamins and minerals available to young seedlings at the time of germination.
Harvesting 7-10 day microgreen sunflower sprouts is much easier than harvesting fruits and vegetables while boasting even more vitamins, nutrients, and minerals than fully developed crops.
Black Oil sunflower sprouts are rich with protein and amino acids along with essential bone-healthy calcium and trace minerals such as iron, potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium. Aside from shellfish, the only natural sources of trace minerals are in vegetable rich diets and microgreens shoots are proven to be one of the best sources for trace minerals.
Sunflower microgreens are intended to be consumed fully green after developing a healthy amount of chlorophyll. The slightly longer 7-10 harvest window allows for microgreen sprouts such as Black Oil sunflower enough time to develop the flavorful green chlorophyll.
Tender and delicious 7-10 day microgreen sunflower shoots still produce as much fiber as fully matured fruits and vegetables but are much easier to chew and digest.
