70 days to maturity. Perilla frutescens. Shiso Herb Seeds (Perilla) - Jeok Ssam IP Seeds. Annual. Perilla is a common Asian herb with the Jeok Ssam IP variety originating from Vietnam. Its leaves are smaller than other varieties, but it makes up for it by packing a big punch of flavor! It is minty and bright with hints of citrus and coriander. It’s easy to see why this herb has been a favorite for centuries. Jeok Ssam IP Shiso can also be grown as an ornamental due to its showy green and reddish-purple leaves. ~ 23,300 seeds / oz.
Choose a location with full sun and average soil. Direct sow this variety as soon as soil can be worked after your last frost. Broadcast seeds or sow a quarter inch deep. Once seedlings are 3 to 4 inches tall, thin to 6 inches apart. Keep weeds down and soil moist, but avoid overhead watering. Fertilize as needed. This variety can also be grown in containers if desired.
Harvesting Jeok Ssam Shiso
This variety can be harvested once plants are established. Cut lower branches and use leaves as desired. For best harvests, give plants plenty of water while they’re growing. Once plants start flowering, the flavor will decrease in quality. For a milder flavor, cut the tip off of the plant once they reach 4 inches tall. The top of the plant will re-grow and this can be repeated.
Commonly used in a variety of Asian dishes, you’ll have no problems finding uses for this tasty herb. Use younger leaves in salads or as a garnish. Large leaves can be used in soups, cooked like other greens as a side dish, or used to wrap other foods. They are often steamed or pickled. Try using it for sushi as well.
Damping off can occur with improper watering. Leaf spot and clubroot can also occur so avoid watering from overhead to keep foliage from getting wet. Aphids, leafminers, and slugs can damage plants. Use typical pest control methods for these insects.
