60 days to maturity. Raphanus sativus. Alpine Gold Korean Radish Seeds. Hybrid, cool season annual, open pollinated. Alpine Gold radishes are a clean, crisp variety with smooth and polished roots. Compared to other radishes, Alpine Golds are sweeter, more disease tolerant, and slower to bolt! With soft green shoulders and creamy white flesh, these elegant radishes are sure to elevate any dish. Originally developed as a spring crop, they can also be sown in late summer or early fall.
Loosen soil in a suitable location; this will help roots grow straight and make harvest easier. Sow roughly 10 seeds per foot in rows 18 inches apart, and thin seedlings until they are four to six inches apart. Water consistently, but avoid soaking roots. Fertilize as needed.
Harvesting Korean Radishes
Harvest carefully, as Korean radishes can break easily. Loosening the soil before sowing and before harvesting can make this process easier. Grab plants as close to the base as possible and pull.
Not sure when to harvest your radishes? Wait until you can see the root shoulders above the ground. If your plants start to bolt or the weather is a risk, harvest early for the best flavor.
Since this variety is particularly sweet, it’s great for eating raw. Use in salads, as part of a veggie tray, or mix with a vinaigrette. Not a fan of raw radishes? Try pickling them for an added bite! Traditionally, Korean radishes are used to make kimchee. Use an online recipe to make this fun dish at home!
Tips From Our Gardeners
"Keep your radish tops! Many Korean dishes use them, and it’s a great way to reduce food waste. They are similar in flavor to arugula and other peppery greens."
Well-draining, soft, and fertile soil with a pH between 5.8-6.8
Pests and Disease:
Fungal diseases, including root rot and damping off may occur without proper plant spacing and watering. Aphids are common and can spread disease so control as much as possible. Additionally, cabbage maggots and harlequin bugs may damage Korean radishes in large numbers.
