Trifolium Hybridum. Alsike clover is a short-lived perennial plant. It is grown widely in the eastern, northern, mid-western states and in the Pacific Northwest. Alsike is similar in many ways to red clover, but it matures 7-10 days earlier. It is especially well adapted to cool climates and wet soils, and will tolerate flooding for considerable periods. Alsike clover seeds will also germinate and produce well on well-drained soils. Clover is a leafy small plant used for ground cover. It makes a great cover crop, and perennial clover is great in fields and yards.
Aliske does well on soils too acidic for red clover, and will tolerate more alkalinity than most clovers; however, it responds to lime application. May be readily established on poorly drained or overflow land. Usually produces only one hay crop a year. Fits well in pasture mixes for wet lands. Alsike clover tends to lodge badly; a companion crop is desirable for hay production. Flowers are pink or white.
Application Rate for Alsike Clover: 15-20 lb/acre or 0.5-2 lbs/1000 sq ft.
Germination: 5-10 Days
Plant Height: 18"
Uses: Green manure, pasture, hay, and excellent nectar source for bees.
Facts to Note: Alsike grows on poorly drained soils. Tolerates temperatures below 0°F. However, is not appropriate for southern U.S.
