55-65 days. Louisiana Green Velvet Okra Seeds - Non-GMO, Heirloom, Abelmoschus esculentus. This 1941 AAS winner is large standing between 5 and 8 feet tall. It thrives in heat and humidity, and needs 2 solid months of true southern summer weather. Plants produce yellow blooms and dark green pods with oak shaped leaves. They are strong and produce productive yields. These pods are good for processing and grow to 8", but should be harvested prematurely. They are dark green, round, slender and spineless.
These okra plants need heat and humidity to thrive, so be sure to plant them at a time where they can get at least 2 months of humid summer weather. Soak seeds overnight, and then sow them ½" deep directly in full sun. Rows should be 3" apart with plants 12-18" apart to allow for full growth. Seeds will germinate after 10-14 days. Plants grow 5-8" tall and produce bright green pods. While these pods can grow to be up to 8" long, they should be harvested when they are 3-4" long to promote continual growth on the plant.
Additional Facts and Information
These bright green pods are excellent for cooking and processing, as they keep their bright green color. Use them in cooked vegetable dishes, grilled, or roasted. This variety of okra was created by Louisiana State University, and it does best in southern environments that are hot and humid.
