How to Grow New Red Fire Leaf Lettuce
This variety has strong heat and moderate cold tolerance. It is suitable both for cool and warm conditions and retains its crisp fresh flavor through the growing season. These seeds need light to germinate, so do not plant too deep. This lettuce is adaptable to many growing conditions, but likes it cool around 60°F-65°F. The seeds will not germinate at temperatures over 75°F. Grow primarily in spring and fall, and slow bolting in the summer by adding shade. In cooler areas it's best to sow these seeds in spring, after last frost, through early summer. In warmer areas plant in both the spring and fall. It's important to ensure that the soil is well-drained. Prepare good fertile soil, kept moist. High temperatures will stress the plant, which encourages bolting.
Harvesting New Red Fire Leaf Lettuce
The lettuce can be harvested by cutting the full loose-leaf head at the base. You can also cut individual leaves throughout the season, this will extend the life a bit. Baby greens can be cut at the base at about 35 days.
Planting successively every few weeks will allow for a longer consistent harvest season, especially if you plan to harvest whole heads at a time.
Culinary Tips
New red fire leaf lettuce can be used in a traditional salad, or as an attractive mixed-color green in any recipe that uses lettuce. It's also a great steamed side dish, and can be mixed with other lettuces or mixed type salads.
