60 days to maturity. Raphanus sativus. Aka (Red) Karaine Hot Radish Hybrid Seeds. Open-pollinated, non-GMO, cool season annual. Aka Red Karaine hot radishes are unique and eye-catching—which is probably why they’ve won awards! Their skin is a deep pink, softening to white at the core. Its low water content gives it an intense spicy flavor that any hot radish fan will adore. These radishes grow in a cylindrical shape to about 6 inches in length. As a bonus, the radish tops are a deep purple, which will look great in your garden! Approx. 3,200 seeds / oz.
Other Common Names:Spicy daikon, Japanese hot radish
How to Grow Aka Karaine Radishes
Prepare your planting bed in an area with appropriate soil and full sun. Break up the soil with a shovel or gardening fork to give the radish roots space to grow. Sow seeds every inch and thin seedlings four to six inches apart after germination, then water consistently to keep the soil moist. Fertilize as needed, but avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers as they will encourage leaf growth.
Harvesting Aka Red Karaine Radishes
After 60 days, these radishes should be ready for harvesting. To do so, pull the radishes directly upwards while grasping at the base. If breakage is an issue, use a spade or shovel to loosen the soil and then remove the radishes.
Radishes can be kept for a long time if stored properly. Cut off the tops completely and then keep them in a cool, dry place such as a basement.
Hot radishes are commonly used for a Japanese dish called daikon oroshi. This fresh and spicy garnish is made by grating the radish with a Japanese grater, and it can be used as a topping for everything from burgers to soups!
