How to Grow China Long Cucumber

Sow seeds directly into a moist garden bed or field soil. To do succession planting, start some seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost and transplant them into prepared soil after hardening off. To extend the harvest, continue planting the seeds over a 3-5 week period. Planting near stakes or trellises and training to climb vertically encourages better fruit and saves garden space.

Mulch or plant a cover crop on bare soil around the plants. This minimizes weeds and increases soil moisture levels. Fertilize when the first blooms appear and periodically for the rest of the season to maximize fruit production. Provide deep, regular water but do not allow puddling near roots. See the free PDF vegetable growing guide for more tips.

Harvesting China Long Cucumber

Fruit is optimally harvested when they are 14-15” long. Harvest promptly when they are filled out. If the harvest is delayed, the plants may stop fruit production.

Culinary Tips

China Long’s thin skin makes them perfect for slicing and eating fresh. Try sprinkling some salt on the slices to draw out excess water before cooking with them. In India, cucumbers are widely seen as healthy and nutritious. Indian cooks grate the fruit into plain yogurt with mint to use as an accompaniment to other dishes.
