Chinese Leek Seeds - Broad Leaved Nira. Heirloom, Non-GMO. Allium tuberosum. 100+ days to maturity. Perennial. This Japanese variety of Chinese leek (nira) has deep green, broad, thick leaves that have a garlic-onion flavor. It is also referred to as flat chives. Its tolerance of heat and cold makes it very easy to grow. Likes full sun and will also thrive in half shade. Once the plant is established, it can be divided and raised for several years. ~ 9,300 seeds / oz.
Excellent choice for home garden and commercial growing. Can also be used to grow the delicate yellow blanched Chinese leek. Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. Direct sow seeds in late spring/ early summer after last frost in sun or partial shade. Keep soil moist. Fertilize as needed. If transplanting, do so when 5-6 leaves appear. Fully mature plants can grow 14-16" tall. Harvest by cutting just above ground level. For growing blanched leeks, only strong plants should be grown in this manner. Cover with a tunnel and exclude all light while continuing to provide all of the plant's other needs. Harvest as usual. For best germination, seed should be stored at 41°F until planted. Very popular in Asian cooking. Use in soups, stir-fries, tempura, dumplings and salads. Excellent in egg and meat dishes. Use onion-flavored flowers as an edible garnish.
