How to Grow Chinese Broccoli Seeds - Suiho - Hybrid
Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. Sow seeds in spring after last frost to early summer or late summer to early fall. Can be planted year-round in subtropical areas. To start indoors, sow 6-8 weeks before last frost with 2-3 seeds per cell, 1” deep in fertile soil. Transplant outdoors after true leaves establish. To sow outdoors, after last frost, sow 2-3 seeds 1” deep 4-6” apart. Thin to 1 plant every 12-18” after true leaves are established. Germination will occur in 10-15 days. Prefers temperatures between 60-70 degrees F. Keep soil moist.
Harvesting Chinese Broccoli
Chinese broccoli is medium maturing and can be harvested after 50-55 days. Harvest main stalk when about 8-10" tall and when 2-3 flowers are about to open.
After this cut, leave the lateral branches as the plant branches freely, creating an extended harvest, although the stems and leaves will be smaller.
Culinary Tips
The soft leaves and tender, crispy stems of Chinese Broccoli have an excellent flavor and are frequently used in stir-fry, steamed, or in soup. Prepare by rinsing well and cutting off the bottom inch of the stems before discarding, then separate the leaves from the stems as they will require less cooking time. Slice the stems into 2 ½” sections. Blanche with hot water, then sauté in oil and season to taste.
Tips From Our Gardeners
"If you struggle with your broccoli bolting in the heat, try adding a thick layer of mulch around the base of your plant to prevent the heat from getting to the roots of the plant."
