70 to 85 Days to maturity. Brassica rapa, Pekinensis group. Chinese Cabbage Seeds - RCC9 Red - Hybrid. Non-GMO. Cool season annual, Hybrid. This RCC9 Red Chinese Cabbage is a hybrid variety that has a much deeper red-purple color than RCC3 variety, with both the exterior and interior leaves having the nice red-purple color.
Prepare fertile and well drained soil that is slightly acidic. Plant these hybrid seeds in full sun after last frost. Plant about 3 inches apart, and thin to 8-10 inches apart when it gets to be a little under 6 inches tall. This variety of cabbage prefers cooler temperatures. Exposing plants to frost or prolonged temperatures below 50°F may result in bolting. If started early indoors, it is best transplanted in early spring or in late summer or early fall. For a spring harvest, transplant seedlings to the garden that have at least 5 to 7 true leaves. Plant 8 to 10 inches apart. These should be raised at 73-75°F during the day and over 53°F at night. Providing plants with adequate water and fertilizer after transplanting will promote faster growth.
Harvesting RCC9 Red Chinese Cabbage
RCC9 Red Chinese Cabbage is fully mature at 70-85 days. The beautiful red-purple heads should be tall and firm. Cut the entire head and stalks from the ground.
Clean the heads of any browned leaves, and check for bugs. They will last for several weeks if kept carefully in plastic bags in the refrigerator.
This specialty Chinese Cabbage is fabulous in fresh salad. The cabbage is great for pickling. Its unique color makes a kimchee dish pretty amazing!
Flea beetles, aphids and cabbage worms can be problem pests. Common cabbage diseases like alternaria leaf spot, clubroot, and downy mildew can be issues. Ensure soil is well drained, and water at ground level to avoid getting the leaves wet.
