How to Grow Green Rocket Chinese Cabbage
Chinese Cabbage grows best with vernalization. This is when the seed experiences an extended period of cold before being planted. When planted the seed experiences a shift in temperatures triggering natural signals of spring's arrival. Sow seeds in the spring and late summer for two harvests.
Because these plants are heavy feeders it is best to apply fertilizer after transplanting or when the young plant is established. Michihili cultivars tend to grow with better stress tolerance and resistance to bolting.
Harvesting Chinese Cabbage
To harvest Chinese Cabbage cut the cabbage head near the base of the plant and soil line. To allow additional heads to form cut a little higher. You can tell your cabbage is ready for harvest when it reaches a suitable size and firmness.
Michihili cabbage can be eaten raw in salads. It has high water content and takes on a sweet and juicy flavor when cooked, picking up other flavors from the food it's cooked with. Since it softens as well, it's frequently used with meats in stir-fries and soups during the last stages of cooking. Preserve by drying or pickling.
