65 Days to maturity. Daucus carota subsp. sativus. Scarlet Red Carrot Seeds. Annual, Non-GMO, Open Pollinated. This deep red carrot grows 6-8"" long and has strong green tops. The red color comes from the high lycopene content, compared with other carrots. Lycopene is a strong antioxidant, which makes this carrot an especially good and healthy choice. This variety has a somewhat sweeter taste than most carrots. It can be eaten fresh or cooked. Cooking this carrot is preferred, because cooking does not diminish the sweet flavor, and makes the lycopene more easily absorbed when eaten. Approx. 18,000 seeds / oz.

How to grow Scarlet Red Carrots
Prepare soil carefully, to ensure nothing will obstruct the growth of the carrots. Clear out any rocks or clay, to allow the carrots to grow freely. Don't plant near tree roots, for the same reason! Seed directly in the garden, about a month before the last frost in spring. Fall crops should be started in midsummer. Keep soil moist. Best temperature is near 70°F. In warmer climates, partial shading can help, and plant later in the season for harvest in the winter.
Harvesting Scarlet Red Carrots
Scarlet Red Carrots should be harvested when fully mature. Check that the roots are about 1/2" wide, to be fully grown, and harvest when the soil is wet. Loosen the soil around the carrots, then pull them up, one by one.
Remove the greens, and store the carrots until needed.
Culinary Tips
Scarlet Red Carrots can be prepared in any way that orange carrots can, and they can be a gardening conversation starter, when served! Chop and cook with rice, or grate into salads as needed. Don't forget the carrot tops! The greens can be used to make a good homemade pesto sauce, or added to basil pesto for a larger batch!

Pests and Disease: | The most common diseases are various leaf blights. For prevention reduce the amount of water on the leaves, and ensure proper spacing. Regular crop rotation is the best prevention. Pests include carrot rust flies, which cause wilting and stunt the growth of plants. Symptoms include a red or purple canker on the top of the carrot root. One solution is to add companion plants like leeks or onions, that repel these flies. |
