Zea mays (90 days) Country Gentleman corn was introduced around 1890 by Frank Woodruff & Sons. Peter Henderson Seed Company followed suit the next year. This old heirloom corn was what the old-timers called "shoe peg" corn. Country Gentleman is characterized by its tightly packed, but uneven rows of kernels. The corn ears reach 7-8 inches long and produce a sweet white kernel. Corn plants reach 8' tall and produce many tillers.
Heavy yields, as it is common to have three or more ears per plant. Many of the old catalogs say that Country Gentleman would stay tender or keep longer on the stalk than most. (Most OP sweet corns have a short window in which to pick them at their peak sweetness/tenderness.) Country Gentleman is regarded by old timers as the finest roasting corn, it was more widely used later as a sweet cream corn when canning became popular. Corn can be eaten fresh or canned. "Without a doubt the sweetest and most tender of all sweet corns." 1896 Peter Henderson & Co. about Country Gentleman Corn Seed. "One of the very sweetest and delicious of all sugar corns." John Salzer Seed Co. 1912 on Country Gentleman.
