Zea mays (115 days). Originating in Appalachia around the late 1800s. Huge yellow kernels not seen in modern corn.
Hickory King produces plants that are 12' tall.
Each stalk produces 2 very large ears.
Excellent for roasting, grits, cornmeal, and cornuts.
Hickory king has a very high leafy green matter which makes it perfect for silage.
Tight husks which help keep out corn worms.
Was also known as "bingo corn" in the South as the kernels are so big they were used as bingo chips!
There are many uses for dent corns like: Hominy, masa harina (what tamales or chips are made out of), Posole, Corn Bread, Corn Muffins, Hush Puppies, Corn Fritters, Grits, and Corn Soup just to name a few!
TIP: Remember these plants grow BIG and produce two LARGE ears. That means they should be planted on 6"-8" centers so they can help support each other in high winds. You can also help by making sure hickory king gets plenty of bone meal when planting. Bone meal will encourage a vigorous root system and help stem strength. If you don't live in an area of high winds you should be fine.
