How to Grow Dragon Suhyo Cucumber
Sow seeds into warm soil after the last frost in the late spring or early summer. Cucumbers are warm-weather vegetables; keeping the soil temperature between 70 and 90℉ is crucial. To get fruit sooner, seed indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost. Then, transplant outdoors after the last frost date and after hardening them off. For more information about hardening off starts, see our free vegetable growing guide! Fertilize and deeply water periodically throughout the fruit-bearing season to increase yields. Training Dragon Suhyo to grow on a trellis or fence saves space, allows for air circulation, and encourages the cucumbers to grow straighter.
Harvesting Dragon Suhyo Cucumber
Harvest the cucumbers when they are at least 9 inches long, but before they reach 12 inches. Gently remove them from the stems with sharp scissors.
Dragon Suhyo cucumbers are a favorite for pickling and salads. Cut the ripe fruit into cubes and add to soup for an interesting and fresh twist. Sooyow varieties are often chosen for pickling thanks to their crisp texture and small seed cavity.
Tips From Our Gardeners
“I have found that harvesting early in the day before the sun hits the fruit for too long improves their flavor and texture. My favorite way to eat the Dragon Suhyo variety is in cucumber sandwiches I make the same day as their harvest!”
