Romaine lettuce has a central rib that runs the length of each leaf. Crisphead lettuce is the traditional round head lettuce, usually with a crisp crunch. Leaf lettuce is fast growing and grows in loose clusters as opposed to compact heads. Butterhead lettuce has a soft, supple texture described as buttery, and mostly grows in loose heads. Batavian lettuce is slower to bolt in the summer heat and have very ruffled leaves. Asian lettuce are popular in Asian cultures and cuisine, and don't fit neatly into other lettuce categories. Lettuce mixes are a blend of one or more types that grow well together. Lettuce seeds can be direct sown as early as soil can be worked or started indoors in early spring. Lettuce Heirloom Seeds grow into annual plants. Lettuce is easy to grow, but will bolt quickly in the high heat of summer. Most lettuces can be grown as microgreens or baby leaf lettuce.
