60 days. Magenta Sunset Swiss chard has striking almost neon pink stems with dark green leaves. These leaves are both beautiful and practical to grow in the home garden. Their leaves are smoother than some other varieties, and grow to be up to two feet in length. This plant can produce a continual harvest throughout the summer season. Leaves are bitter in taste, and taste quite similar to spinach. Both the leaves and stems can be consumed, and are delicious and fresh. You got to love the color!
Magenta Sunset Swiss Chard is a hardy and delicious plant that can be sown one to two weeks before the final frost of the season. Sow seeds just when the soil can be worked and is not frozen over. Mixing in a compost to the soil can help provide the nutrients for the plants to thrive. Ideally, the soil should have a pH between 6 and 6.4, but what is most important is that it is not too dense, but is moist and rich for the roots to grow well. The seeds can either be sown directly, or transplanted as seedling in areas with longer winters. When sowing the seeds, be sure to choose a spot with full sun, and space the seeds at least 18 inches apart for rows and plant spacing. The leaves will grow to their full size after around 60 says, at which point they can be harvested. Harvest full size leaves leaving the other leaves on the head to continue to grow, or harvest the head as a whole. These plants may continue to produce throughout the entire summer season.
These beautiful and bright swiss chard leaves make an excellent statement both in the garden and in an array of dishes! Swiss chard is loaded with nutrients, and has a bitter taste similar to the taste of spinach.
